Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Tropica’ is a subspecies of the well-known Cryptocoryne Wendtii. When grown submerged, this popular Crypt will have long, green/orange/bronze crinkled leaves. It grows at a moderate rate, like other Crypts, and can be grown both submerged and emerged. Cryptocoryne care is similar to that of other low-light aquatic plant species such as Anubias, Bucephalandra, and others. Crypts spread via runners, which can be cut and replanted into the soil if desired. Plant individual stems about one inch apart for good coverage. Water trumpets can be planted in groups as long as all of the roots have access to nutrients from the substrate.

This lovely variety, with its dark, hammered leaves, is named after ‘Tropica.’ When grown in the open, the leaves will almost always be on the bottom. It is suitable for small aquariums, with leaves ranging from 10 to 20 cm in length and a rosette ranging from 10 to 20 cm in width. It grows well in hard water, as do most other Cryptocorynes from Sri Lanka.

Potted aquarium plants are submerged and have been adapted to aquarium environments.

Once planted, Cryptocoryne prefers not to be moved. If at all possible, avoid moving them. Make no drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will cause the aquarium plant to melt and rot. Better growth will result from CO2 injection and high-quality aquarium soil.
